Database Expert


What you will be doing:

 

Support for projects:

  • Provide DB setup deliverables for applications installed at clients
  • Provide DB upgrade deliverables for migrations involving change of OS platforms, change of DB architecture, change of DB engines, adjustments of data models
  • Support testing and development teams with DB-related issues
  • Assess different architectural options and be able to articulately present pros and cons for a non-DBA audience
  • Suggest and implement standard backup and monitoring policies for installed DB-s
  • Provide support for fixing production performance issues

 

Research and support towards adoption of free/cloud alternatives:

  • Research, advise and implement free relational or NoSQL options to traditional paid relational DB engines
  • Develop or customize existing DBaaS solutions
  • Develop and act as an expert in related DB technologies, including adoption of new functionalities and analyzing future market trends
  • Define and implement optimized application architectures involving multiple DB-engines

 

What you have:

 

Either one of:

Relational DB engines:

  • Oracle: understanding of internal architecture, partitioning, DataGuard, RAC, localization support, performance tuning concepts and methodologies
  • MySQL/MariaDB: understanding of internal architecture, storage engines, partitioning, master-slave replication, Galera cluster, localization support, performance tuning concepts and methodologies

 

NoSQL databases/data stores (understanding of internal architecture, deploying failsafe architectures, horizontal scaling options, engine or data model performance tuning):

  • ElasticSearch
  • Cassandra
  • MongoDB

 

At least medium level in one of the above and willingness to learn about the other

Hands-on experience as an operational DBA would be nice to have

 

At least working/user level of:

  • OS, storage and networking concepts (able to understand the arguments of the experts and articulate the needs from DB point of view)
  • Cloud environments and deployments: Openstack concepts, user level interaction with an IaaS or PaaS, able to deliver DBaaS solutions
  • Knowledge about containerization technologies and frameworks: Docker, Mesos, Kubernetes
  • Shell scripting
  • Automation tools: Ansible, Terraform
  • Monitoring tools: Grafana, Kibana

 

Soft skills:

  • Willingness to research and learn all the technologies mentioned and others that may appear as a result of DB market evolution
  • Analysis skills: able to organize large amounts of information, received both from technical and business sources and to produce clear and rigorous suggestions and deliverables
  • Communication skills: able to understand the point of view of other groups (development, business analysts, testing, integrators) and articulate DBa needs in a manner adapted for each one of them
